Why are watermelons meant to be eaten alone?

SMILE! Finally… local watermelon is here! And it’s the perfect Summer-y day to enjoy.

People often forget that a lot of what we consider “Summer foods” really only ripen closer to the end of Summer.

This is by design. Nature gives us foods that cool, hydrate and draw out the accumulated heat of months of Summer sunshine right when we need it most….at the end.

It’s worth the wait. There’s nothing like eating a truly sweet, ripe watermelon bought straight from the farmer down the road.

Melon is best eaten alone. It’s so hydrating due to its high water content that your digestive system would have a hard time digesting anything else in your belly. Ayurveda, Yoga’s sister science, suggests eating melons 30 minutes away from other foods to ensure proper digestion.

Poor digestion can lead to feeling sluggish, never mind belly troubles, which can weigh you down on a beautiful Summer day.

Hope you’re at the beach or swinging in the hammock enjoying the last few days of Summer.

Happy Melon Season!
